Travel Guide to Thasos island, Greece
The tiny island of Thasos (Thassos) is an almost circular piece of Greek perfection. As traditional as sipping ouzo in a waterfront taverna, it's the place to head if you're looking for a truly unspoilt Greek island getaway. Along the coast, long, lazy sweeps of sand dotted with sunloungers share ocean views with intimate little coves offering uninterrupted peace and quiet. Head inland, meanwhile, and you'll come across rugged peaks and emerald forests packed with pines, cedars, chestnuts and oaks. This is fantastic walking territory.
Thasos island is the ideal place to sling your rucksack on your shoulder and set off down sun-dappled trails on a journey of discovery. Or why not hire a car and discover it that way? Thasos is home to no less than three championship golf courses so it's a great place to practise your swing in the sunshine. When you're ready to refuel, pick one of the authentic tavernas scattered across the island, like those that line the waterfront of Thasos Town, and enjoy a little Greek dancing with your moussaka. Of course, like all the Greek islands of Greece, Thasos has a fine archaeological legacy that stems from the fabulous wealth it accumulated in ancient times, and you'll find plenty of ruins well worth a place in your holiday photo album.

The coastline of Thasos is home to an abundance of beaches that cater for a variety of tastes. The west coast tends to be quieter while the east side of the island wins for pure dramatic scenery. Golden Beach is among the best, its magnificent sweep of soft sand set against a stunning mountain backdrop. Equally breathtaking are beaches such as Paradiso and Alyki while Skala Potamias has all the facilities of a popular tourist resort. With a little legwork you can easily find a patch of sand that serves up a little privacy with your suntan. That's the beauty of Thasos island – it's a long way off from being crowded and there are plenty of coves and bays offering a blissful sense of seclusion.
Traditional Greek favourites fill the menus of Thasos' tavernas and bars. Taramasalata, a tasty puree of salted mullet roe and breadcrumbs, and tzatziki, a refreshing yoghurt, cucumber, mint and garlic combo, eaten with the local crusty bread is a popular way to start a meal. The main courses are packed with local produce, like fresh fish and olives.
Nuts feature regularly in sauces, cakes and biscuits and try the honey-drenched baklava, layered with nuts and pastry its simply delicious. As in much of Greece, ouzo is savoured before dinner. The main meal is often accompanied by retsina, whose unusual flavour originated some three thousand years ago when jars were sealed with pine resin plugs. Thasinos, a dry red wine is produced locally from the Tzortzina grape and is well worth a try
