Travel Guide to Poros island, Greece
Poros is actually two islands, Sferia and Kalavria, with less than 30 sq. kilometres and just over four thousand residents between them. The division between the two islands is also lop-sided. Most residents cluster precariously on the volcanic rock which is Sferia, home to the port and main town. Kalavria is more fertile heavily pine-forested and lacks any major population density. There’s also a transient population of Athenian weekenders and international visitors including a liberal helping of sailing fans.
Poros island benefits from very close proximity to the Peloponnese mainland. So you can take a pleasant tour here by car via Corinth (there’s even a train service to Corinth direct from Athens airport and then you can hire a car) and any one of a number of attractive resorts and places of interest you’ll pass along the way. A hydrofoil ferry or catamaran from Piraeus will whisk you to Poros in less than 90 minutes. Traditional ferries take somewhat longer.

Poros enjoys a temperate climate that sees warm, sunny days as late as November and as early as February. Because it’s just that little bit further from Athens it doesn’t tend to get as much weekend trade as Aegina or Agistri but it still attracts plenty of domestic visitors! It’s an attractive, wooded island with a pleasant port capital, a somewhat limited historical and cultural focus and a sprawling hillside enclave of neoclassical and far newer properties. As you approach on the ferry, the narrow strait with its islets and hillside clock tower just begs to be photographed!
There are no direct air links to Poros island and Athens hosts the nearest airport. However, onward links via the express bus to Piraeus and regular daily connections with Poros make journeying here reasonably easy. Travelling time is less than two hours for the hydrofoils and catamarans but considerably more for the ferries. You can island hop the Saronic with services to Hydra and Spetses as well as some Peloponnese mainland destinations. Not to forget the tiny water buses that churn back and forward to neighbouring Galatas on Greece mainland. In fact they’ve not long added a little roll-on – roll-off ferry between the two!
Most of Poros resorts are sufficiently close to the main town to be walkable and this may persuade you to be lazy and venture no further than the main harbour for dinner or a stroll. Be adventurous! Visit the further flung beaches and places of interest. Most are reachable on the local bus routes. Classical history buffs may decide to visit the Temple of Poseidon and the journey around the larger island, Kalavria, is undoubtedly attractive. However, there’s arguably more to be gained from the lovely coastal views than what’s on offer within the boundaries of the temple itself! And the view of Vayionia Bay may look appealing but close up the beach has been allowed to fester somewhat.
Poros is a great place for a few days or even a fortnight’s relaxing holiday. With a liberal sprinkling of cultural pursuits, some attractive beaches and plenty of places to eat and drink, it makes a great destination for families and those who do not crave a plethora of karaoke bars and mega-decibel nightclubs.
