Travel Guide to the Mainland of Greece

Greece attracts holidaymakers from all over the world, with visitors flocking to the country enjoy the wonderful beaches, fantastic Mediterranean climate, quaint unspoilt villages and its' fascinating history and culture.
Whilst arriving in Greece, many visitors head straight to the port, to escape to the numerous Greek islands that dot the clear blue seas, but mainland Greece has a multitude of resorts offering beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery and wonderful food and drink - simple ingredients for a relaxing holiday. Mainland Greece is much greener and more mountainous than the islands, and, in general, tends to be less developed. Well served by charter and scheduled flights from the UK, mainland Greece offers distinct tourist regions to explore. Most visitors fly into Athens, the capital, in the south of Greece - a bustling city dominated by the Parthenon on the Acropolis. Athens is a busy and thriving centre, and tourist areas and beach resorts around the city include the Apollo Coast, Glyfada, Voula, and Kineta. The largest region on mainland Greece is Macedonia in the north, its' capital Thessaloniki a vibrant and bustling Byzantine coastal city.
From here, visitors head south for the beaches of Chalkidiki (Halkidiki), the distinct trident-shaped peninsula in the Aegean,  with its' Blue Flag beaches and breathtaking scenery.
The Pelion Peninsula in Central Greece is just the place for a truly relaxing and authentic Greek holiday, with charming villages scattered around the green and mountainous landscape, and sandy beaches perfect for family fun. On the southern tip of mainland Greece is the Peloponnese region, boasting beaches with sparkling waters on both the Ionian and Aegean sides. A firm favourite with nature-lovers, this area is perfect for those looking for something "off the beaten track".  The Peloponnese abounds with ancient sites to visit, such as the theatre at Epidaurus, the palace of Agamemnon, and perhaps most famously, the ruins of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
